Same here, the black boxes take way too much of the available screen space, thus making it unbearable to play.

hayuto: Yeah i dont like 16:9 either, i like my 4:3 monitor and hope that all game will support it :D waiting for a patch...
I like my 5:4 monitor too ! I wait for a patch too !
Well at least that gives me time to finish playing through Witcher 1 again :D....
Word. About a year ago my old hard drive crashed and I couldn’t recover much (not my TW1 saves anyway) :<

Oh well, back to Temeria I go.

Irridium: Yeah, its annoying as hell. I really hate the black bars. Both in film, on TV, and in games. I payed quite a bit of money for my monitor/TV, I'd like to use ALL of it. Hopefully it gets patched.
It's either black bars OR some of the screen that would normally be viewable gets cut off.

The developers chose to let you see everything as intended and left you with the black bars.

Personally I have a 16:10 display instead of a 16:9 display so I still have black bars (although much smaller then the 4:3 ones I imagine) but would rather have those black bars then have content cut from my screen.
They only support the default tv resolution for some weird reason. Probably the same reason why the menus and inventory feel like an xbox-game. My guess is that as soon as they've finished porting the engine, we'll see this game without any change appear on consoles.

There's nothing wrong with that, mind. But I think it's silly not to leverage the PC's input/output options to the fullest (inventory in grid with mouseover descriptions like TW1 works a lot faster than scrolling through some list all the time, support for 4:3, 16:10 and 5:4).

Fortunately, support for different aspect ratios will be patched in later.
Hm, I have 1920x1200 resolution - and I get to choose from the entire range of resolutions (4:3/5:4/16:9/16:10) or am I perhaps missing something?

Yeah you can choose any resolution you want, except the game doesn't care. The in-game GUI (Text, buttons, inventory) is optimized for 16:9 - to be specific, 1920x1080 and nothing else.

If you'd choose 1920x1200 you still only see 1920x1080 - the rest is covered by bars from the game (needn't tell you how absurd that is)

Conversely, if you play at 1280x1024 you only see 1280x720p , thats black bars for a quarter of the screen. Not to mention you can plainly see that the font wasn't made for 720p either.

Ya exactly, my borders are around an inch and a half top and bottom, just makes me crazy trying to play.

No fix as of yet sadly.
I really don't care if they cut off stuff either as long as the black bars are gone o.O also I think things would then look bigger and would be less annoying for the eyes to find :O
For you guys on here, please see my current forum posting. There has been some word on CD projekt regarding this topic and others. Trying to keep all the current info in one place.

Now that I look closely - I see it, haven't noticed those black bars before... :P

Doesn't matter for me though, I think it's fine this way actually - just like movies :)

Being at the movies is great, if you are in fact WATCHING a movie. Playing a game however means a whole lot more concentration, which on 1/3 of the screen because the other 2/3 are pure black, makes it all the more difficult. I can sit for 2 hours through a movie and not need to strain my eyes, but playing a game is so difficult using the same aspect ratio.
Same for me too, I have a good old CRT monitor (it's really a pain playing old 640*480 or 800*600 games in LCD screens). I found a temporary solution though. I just set the resolution to 1280*720. Now the game fit to the screen perfectly, but the characters are a bit taller and thin.

Still I really can't understand why they don't add the 4:3 ratio. I hope they fix this with an earlier patch. This is my only disappointment about the game, otherwise great masterpiece.
