So I was playing the Witcher 2 on Insane, got to act to and everything was going super smooth until I got to a place where I was presented with a choice. I had to get to a certain place and I could chose between two paths. First path meant that I had to fight some monsters, the second path meant that I had to sneak through. I decided to be sneaky and went fro the second path. I was going through and at one point I got discovered so I thought: fine I have my full health and my Quen shield fully up, I'm gonna run through it and see what happens. So I start running and then suddenly I get a cut scent with Garalt getting shot with an arrow which meant insta-death. There wasn't even an archer in sight. I just got 1 shotted without any indication or anything. My gear was top notch so it's impossible to say that I couldn't take 1 arrow.

Bottom line, the game cheated and now I wanna cheat back so that I can continue from the last save I made.

Is there any way to restore my Insane save? Maybe Hex editor or CheatEngine?

The game is super awesome and I don't want the experience to be ruined by a silly thing like that.

thx for the reply, I'll try the inspector thing. As for the copies of the saves, that doesn't work. It's pretty cheat-proof. Even if you make a back up of all of the savegame folder and replace it when you die, the game will still recognize it as dead. It's pretty nice. Reinstalling the game also doesn't work. The devs really thought of everything, except the fact that their game contains spots that allow for cheap deaths.

I don't call it game cheating because The game has an equal-opportunity mechanism for the damn FOV!! (...everyone gets hit even on EZ)

Would saving the game in a different directory...meaning copying your successfull saves to an onther area periodically and replacing your normal if you screw-up help??(might have to clear your buffer)

Silly thing like that was the INSANE portion of the desription....RUIN the game for your interpretation of intent of dev. is insane...sorry pls be realistic!!

Just an FYI, getting detected in that scenario = insta death. You're not supposed to survive the arrows.

I suspect you're going to have issues with another "sneaking" part of the game that has instant death when detected a little further in the game.

So, I reiterate, take your licks like a man. Insane mode was meant for you to fail and be forced to start over.

You were presented with a choice and didn't manage to complete the stealthing in bit - how is the game cheating you? You failed the objective and didn't manage to sneak in - you died. Simple as that, right?

Wrong, if I failed to sneak in, it's a stupid idea to have to die because of that and not be able to get another chance. The problem is that there was no indication so there was no way to prevent it. It would have been fair to have real archers start shooting at you for real and then you could have backed off or something.

It seems that this concept is pretty hard for some people to understand. I've played Diablo 2 hardcore ladder and I can tell when a game is fair and when it isn't, when there is so much invested.

If you think that this sort of thing is fair, then there is no reason to have included the Insane mode since the only way to beat it is to HAVE to die and simply learn all the possible places where such insta-deaths can occur. The ability to beat the game through skill and not through repetition is gone and the value of the difficulty setting is diminished to nothing. Saying that you beat the game on Insane means nothing since all you did was play through it a hundred times and know everything by heart, not because you are able to go through the fights and levels with skill and strategy without dying a single time.

If I understood it right, the location where you were when you died was the army camp of King Henselt. Do you really think it's unfair that the devs made it so that if you get detected sneaking around there, that you'd be instantly killed?

Diablo 2 has no real player choice component. There you have total control over the combat gameplay. You, however, have chosen to play a challenging game, that is about making difficult choices and living (or dying) with the consequences, in a perma-death game mode....an insane decision (hence the mode name). And it sounds like you chose...poorly.

Please dont come here to complain that the hardest difficulty setting in the game is, in fact, quite difficult. It's a waste of your time, and everyone else's.

It's not the decision that is unfair, it's the way they made it. Instead of suddenly dying while with full heath and shield, they could have put 10 archers that shoot at you and that way if you're good enough you can escape and try again, if you aren't you still get to die. In the current situation no matter how cautious or good you are at the game you die anyways no matter what. There is nothing fair in that.

Anyways, if you're looking to cheat the system, try the Steam community. They have an achievement for insane mode, so I'm sure if anyone has figured out how to cheat it already, it's them.
