So, I've found settings that at least make it so the game doesn't crash every 5 minutes, but it still crashes after a couple hours. At least the game is somewhat playable now, but still really unstable.
I found settings that somewhat work on this reddit thread you can find googling "witcher 3 keeps crashing." It's not acceptable that I have to make these special settings, or even have to lower settings so much to get the game to work when my computer is more than capable of handling games on very high settings, but hopefully they'll fix that and not give up on it like most developers do. Hopefully it doesn't take them years to fix it either.
Anyway

Win 7 home premium x64
i7 2600k CPU @ 3.40GHz
8GB RAM
NVidia Geforce GTX 970 (352.86)

Crashes every couple hours. I don't know any specific triggers- seems random.

Edit: After the tutorial area it crashes every 30 minutes or so. Ugh.

Hi everyone,

Just installed the game via the GOG Galaxy launcher and patched it up to 1.04. Sadly after the tutorial I experience the game freezing up randomly: for me usually after fights. Reading your comments I'm somewhat glad I'm not alone in this, but it's frustrating there isn't a solution to this fundamental problem yet.

So, here are my specs:
Win 8.1 Pro 64Bit
Processor: Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5 GHz + MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
RAM: 16GB
Graphic card: AMD Radeon HD R9 290 4GB
Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60 Hz)

EDIT: I changed the framerate from 60 to Unlimited as someone suggested. This seemed to help at first, but now it's freezing again.
EDIT2: ...but it doesn't happen as often as first, so there you have it.

So with 1.04 and still the same issue, have found out that running 660TI with low on everything and medium textures, borderless window unlimited frames and underclock core GPU value by 48 is working the best - but having a low level of background characters make people jump out of nowhere very often and the game is playable - but performancewise - not really enjoyable.

Heisangard: I still have this problem, sent 2 tickets and none of them worked for me.One of them is ;

"Hi,

There are 4 ways to get rid of this nasty issue:

1.Download and Install Microsoft Net Framework
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=30653

2.Download and Install Microsoft Visual C ++
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977003

3.Download and Install DirectX
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=35

4.Download and Install the latest Windows update.

Regards,
Kuba Woźniakowski"

I hope this will work for someone.My system is;

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Amount of RAM: 8148MB
Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Driver update-date: 5/12/2015 09:27:22, 15858728 bytes

Does anyone who play game via steam having this issue? I was wondering Does GOG Glaxy might cause this as well?
yeah i pretty much have the same specs as you and i bought it on steam. still crashing as you do.
1.04 has really downgraded performance for me. NPCs occasionally pop in, and shadows sometimes look like old bitmap effects. I've encountered at least three kinds of crashes. One requires a hard reboot: everything freezes, but the sound continues in a weird, slow stutter. The second has struck while quitting a few times-- the background/music will continue in a loop a couple of seconds long; if it doesn't end itself, I have to restart because somehow the game is interfering with input for every other process.

Third one isn't so much a crash, though it might as well be. A few times it's minimized out of nowhere... and maximizes to an invisible window. Sound's running, game's taking input, but all I see is desktop.

I'm enjoying the heck out of the game, but this is driving me nuts. I'm well within specs, the game came with a new video card, and all of my drivers and such are up to date, so I'm at a loss. :(
whatever the version of the game i play, about 5 minutes ingame, everytime i get a freeze followed by the game minimizing itself to the desktop with the sound still playing...
Tried many things to fix it but nothing works.

halp ?

Same issues here..game is running fine and out of the blue the game minimizes...I can hear the game and sound yet it will not come back, I have to ctr-alt-del and force close then I go back to my old savegame again. This has happened about 8 times today alone! I am patched and all that junk!
I'm on Steam but from day one up to now with patch 1.04 I suffered only three crashes, one hang but resolved itself. I let Witcher 3 decide what graphics options it can use then tone down post-processing with only the following enabled, full-screen, vsynch, bloom, chromatic aberration, sharpening (low), vignette, and light shafts.

Although what works for me might not work for you.

Didn't realise there was a catch all thread for these issues. I'm getting the black screen CTDs with music and sound still audible.
Totally unacceptable that there are so many people who can't play the game, I guess as long as it's a minority then who cares right CDPR? shameful
I wonder when they will fix this, we are a lot to get this issue. It makes the game unplayable, yet they still focus on thing to improve FPS perfomances...
I have frequent Memory Alerts (lack of RAM) that always conduct to game crash. It happens with High and Extrem settings, even if there are now lag in the game in both cases (with around 2.5/3GB of still free RAM) !

It is (very) most frequent in large cities.

Here is my configuration:
- ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER
- Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4GHz
- Corsair Vengeance 8 Go DDR3
- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD7870 2Go Dual-X
- Windows Seven Pro 64 bits

TW3 version 1.04

Memory exhaustion/low happened to me too since patch 1.04 specially if I go to regions back and forth.

This is still happening to me...on a regular basis but at different times, I can play for half and hour at times and a minute at other times...
Anything else , about the problem ? Some news or anything ?

Hi,

I had this problem with several crashes and freezings, than I found that my main problem was with video card fan. It was slowed by mechanic flaw forcing shut down the game to avoid damage to others hardwares.

Another typical problem that force shut down games which need high performance and increase inner heat it is the level of thermal paste applyed both in GPU and CPU. Sometimes we think game engine is the vilain and complain to developers about a fair patch to solve chashes, but forget the maintanance of hardware.

So, an advanced maintence is mandatory to keep performance stability.
