The reason I nominate the Fuller Center is that they recently built a home just blocks from where I live. I am part of a Christian group living in and doing work in a poor neighborhood. And it warms my heart to see others working to help the same people I care so deeply about. The charity page link to above mentions the recent project on Caven street. That is the one near me.

A very nice initiative - thanks to the Sigil. While it's tough to beat dtgreene's nomination, I'll definitely enjoy reading about charities from around the world that are more local in their outlook. I will probably enter a nomination of my own.

Of note: In the United States, the term "non-profit" is generally accepted as a 501(c)3 organization, which is a registered charity.

This is a useful site, but is incomplete - I just looked for a highly respected AIDS organization in Seattle and it wasn't there. Also, organizations in the US that receive less than $50,000 annually are only required to submit a Form 990N tax return, which doesn't include enough information to be rated by the site.

Even if its a 501c3? Well good to know anyhow.

I'm not sure who to nominate, Either Medicaines Sans Frontiers or I'll defer to a charity in the UK.

But how many actually do charitable work?! - and specifically - in the sense we have outlined? Mozilla, for instance... doesn't count. Groupees is supposedly not for profit... yet they seem to have a shovelware agenda! O___o
Many other organisations also would not count (for this GA I mean of course) due to political affiliations / primary causes.
Basically its a case of think about it carefully.
Theres two weeks on this, and hopefully we'll have time to go through all the entries with a few days to spare in case anybody has crossed wires / misses a qualifying piece of info (such as the website link etc).

Edit: and just to make it even clearer (for everybody), things like tech related non-profits, the arts etc are all out - this is about other people (though we'll of course accept animals in that bracket in line with the rules).

It's possible the word "charity" is used more broadly here, but maybe it's just that I work in taxes, where all donations (see your accountant) to non-profit organizations are deductible as "charitable contributions." Personally, though thrown off by the term, I was thinking about exactly what the Sigil was thinking about. I'm not crass enough to nominate Groupees in this season of giving. Unless... ;)

Think you can get any of those large american corporations to actually pay their UK taxes then?!

In my neck of the woods the general annual limit on charitable donations as a percentage of net income is 75%.

But its only on orgs in country. Else you must prove a source of income in the country your donated organization belongs to.

A few months ago on twitter I actually declared my intention to become the first King of England in 500 years to win my throne on the field of battle, but in reality I am a touch less powerful than the UK government. American corporations are good at many things, but paying taxes ain't one of 'em. :)
