amok: I had a little ponder about this. It looks like a good game, and I am looking forward to it - but can it be considered to be experimental?
gameon: I've not seen a game that is both explorational and in space with a realistic look to it. The closest thing to this would be that nasa game.
But graphical fidelity aside, the game itself is basically "just" a 3D action-adventure? There are quite a few explorational games out there, and some set in space. The narrative (from what I have seen) is more typical sci-fi, the graphics are good, but still not unusual today.
Granted there is a few games on the list which is explorational, but there is some other angles to them also. For example FRACT - which is based on musical visualisation, Proteus EP - which is all about the soundscapes the player makes when exploring, and Experiment 112 - which is based on surveillance as a gameplay mechanic and a non-controllable avatar (I am constantly considering taking Experiment 112 of the list also, by the way)
I am not saying the Lifeless Planet is a bad game, but does it really have an experimental angle? In one way the production may be seen as one (1 man production team using new tools to create AA game), but there are several other Indies doing the same, and I am not sure if it could be considered experimental, more like part of the constant evolution of game development.
I am also not saying you are wrong - but convince me :).
