real.geizterfahr: Microsoft will give W7 support until 2020
nah, the new shit is like this:
-Skylake and above: they'll drop support for W7 in 1.5 years, so that means 2.5 years earlier than they originally promised (jan 2020);
-lower (old) CPUs: W7 support until originally promised, in jan 2020.

This is a dick move by ms, they are desperate to create a huge w10 monopoly and then reap the benefits of a closed and captive market. Dick move by hardware manufacturers also, who now will have to work less and grow their profits, from the same captive market (new software <-> new hardware paradigm)

Also, the businesses are fukked with this shit.

Anyway, for me the choice is clear: Hello Linux! :) I suppose we will meet sooner than 2020 as I anticipated (with all the shitty w10 moves so far). probably even this year, since what ms is doing is unacceptable, I can't support this shit company doing shit moves, can't support a shitty ms/w10 monopoly.

I can only hope that more people and very important! more businesses will jump soon to linux alternative.

I made the switch due to other dickish moves. It took a little while to figure things out, but now I actually like using my computer more than ever before. Make a USB stick today and give it a try.

Every thing I learn about win10 only reinforces my decision which is the same as yours. Windows died to me after 7. When I upgraded one of my PCs just a few months ago I even went on ebay to buy a win7 license because I'm adamant on not putting any win8, win10 or future crap on any hardware I own.

I suppose I might dip my toes on Linux next year.
What else to expect from a company that spawned people like Steve Balmer who called Linux a and also said that it is [url=http://www.theregister.co.uk/2000/07/31/ms_ballmer_linux_is_communism/]communism.
I think I will become a comrade in a few years...
Why I hate Microsoft so much?

What does "support" mean? And who's "they"? Windows 7's mainstream support, which means that new features and tweaks will be added, ended one year ago! That's why Windows 7 doesn't get DirectX 12 ;)The extended support (that's security fixes) will end in 2020. Assuring compatibility with new CPUs isn't a security fix. This isn't Microsoft's job anyway (that's why I asked who's "they")... If Intel wants their new CPUs compatible with old systems, they can lways release drivers for old systems (which costs money).

mobutu: -lower (old) CPUs: W7 support until originally promised, in jan 2020.
That's because older CPUs were released when Microsoft still worked on improving Windows 7 - they did this more than 5 years long, from the end of 2009 (release) to the beginning of 2015 (end of mainstream support).

mobutu: This is a dick move by ms, they are desperate to create a huge w10 monopoly and then reap the benefits of a closed and captive market.
No. It's economy. They kept on developing Windows 7 for 5 years! That's a long time already and you can't keep on throwing money into a product that you don't even sell anymore (since a bit more than 2 years) forever.

mobutu: Dick move by hardware manufacturers also, who now will have to work less and grow their profits, from the same captive market (new software <-> new hardware paradigm)
That's bullshit. They have to evaluate if it is worth to guarantee compatibility of new hardware with old systems. And as I ssaid erlier already: People who use a 9 years old OS, probably won't need a top notch high end CPU anyway.
And yet nobody complains when firefox auto-updates and only provides bug fixes in its latest release, or when google chrome only supports its latest version.

As a software developer, working with a commercial off the shelf product, I fully sympathise with MS on this. It's really hard to retro fix bugs in older versions, or to maintain back compatibility with older versions. I cannot think of many companies that will actually fix a version of their product that is not the latest.

If you don't want to upgrade, you don't have to, but they don't have to keep fixing that product. You didn't actually buy any support agreement with MS, they just happen to have a policy on the subject.

blotunga: It seems they are trying to force everyone to upgrade. I wonder when Wine for Windows will appear. Also GOG for example will have to work a lot to fix the rest of the library to work on W10.

Starkrun: this is FUD... stop tracking it all over... I have a 200 large catalog and I've tested it.. every game that worked in 7 works in 10...

Those with issues (older adventure some rare dos titles) were even more stable. Hell some ran better due to memory and process management improvements in 10.

GOG doesn't take this lightly or sitting down, but there are very certain conditions that need to exists for a game to not work in 10. Two of which is certain forms of DRM and specific code strings in the runtimes. And both GOG can/has fixed.
Well, i have over 600 but i've clearly seen complaining about some of them now working on W10. I didn't had the time to test them all though. Also on the game page of some games W10 is not listed as supported. So it might work but no guarantees.
Lol, another post for the Elenarie troll to shine...

real.geizterfahr: Windows 7 will be 9 years old in 2018...
With any luck they'll have finally managed to produce something better by then. Given the way they seem to be taking big strides towards on OS that hardly acknowledges the user at all, I'd say fat chance of that. But then I had similar doubts about Win7 after the Vista debacle.
So, the typical hate Microsoft threads?

And now that's hating Microsoft for not supporting old OSes on new hardware, of which these OSes could potentially not take the full advantage of the hardware. Oh well. Yawn. How boring can this hatetrain get.......

bela555: Why I hate Microsoft so much?
Because you need to have a good look at your life to realise what your issues are?
Well, crap, and I wanted an upgrade next year. Actually one plan was this year, but... And yes, by that I definitely mean hardware upgrade, but stick to Win 7 at least until 2020 and assume I get all security and bug fixes throughout this time. 8/8.1 and 10 are not and will never be options, definitely.

wpegg: And yet nobody complains when firefox auto-updates and only provides bug fixes in its latest release, or when google chrome only supports its latest version.
I do, and tend to not allow auto-updates for anything (bar definitions for the antivirus). Also, won't touch Chrome.

Elenarie: Calm your tits down. Again, the Internet tries to make of this a complete shit of FUD.
...snip
It is good for everybody. If your shit works now, it will continue to work, there is no need for a picnic attack.
I kinda going to kick myself for this, but I agree with Elenarie on this. Its nothing new, every time new tech comes out old tech gets a limited lifecycle and is then discontinued. Yes, its not good that M$ want to push us all towards Win10, but I don't think its fair also to expect endless updates to things when tech has moved on. So am I missing something here, is something actually going to stop working, or is this just support discontinuation?

As for the above, I would like to see a picnic attack.
Here is something I don't understand: if Intel won't support Windows 7 after a certain date, wouldn't that create a market opportunity for AMD? Why are they following Intel in a similar time frame? Did the three companies have a meeting to discuss this matter or something?
