Kabuto: I thought it was better for all weapons to use the main bar. That way you didn't need to go searching for weapon specific energy. I found the ice wand to be the best overall weapon but the key was to use the jacks in combination with another weapon to give nearly twice the damage while using less energy.
I must say the worst part was being underwater and being bitten by hard to kill snarks.
I beat the original twice and it was a very well programmed game. A patch was released only for Matrox video card users and while being a win98 game, ran perfectly on Vista x64 without enabling compatibility. Also was fine with xp. I imagine since 7 and Vista same the same basic kernel that it should run perfectly on win7 x64. Hard to come by now. Good thing I picked up a pair of new jewel case copies for $0.96 each on final clearance two years ago.

I agree that having the same ammo for all weapons can be a good thing, but only if the weapons are properly balanced. With a system like that, any weapon that's too weak compared to others will never be used. Only weapons I used in Alice were the knife, the ice wand (only till I got the Jacks), the Jacks and the Eye Staff. Eveything else was useless.
Don't remember having any problems with underwater portions of the game, but it's been a while. And yeah, the game was very well programmed, never encountered any bug/crash. Then again, it was built on the Quake3 engine. I've never played an unstable Quake3 engine game =P

FlintlockJazz: True, let us hope EA is smart enough to realise that the hype of the new game will prompt sales of the older one. Sadly my experience of companies in general over the years has shown that most are run by people with single digit IQs, so we can only hope. :(

Well, I am sure we have bigger chances if we got the creator on our side.
Here's his forum. Just contact one of the mods if you can ask Mcgee about GoG:

If they do re-release the original it will likely be a free with pre-order thing like Mafia for Mafia 2, I suspect. Could show up here at the same time, if EA and GOG have a deal by then.

Cheers dude, I signed up and sent a message asking if there is any intention to re-release Alice, and on a place lke GoG.com, lets hope they choose to answer it. :D
I can't wait for this game maybe I should finish the first one again.
Something tells me the huge sucess of the Tim Burton film has a lot to do with Alice 2 coming out.
It's a great game, though I don't have high opinion of American McGee's efforts since, and so far he is a "One Hit Wonder" in the game designing world.
agree that sticking somebody's name in front is quite clumsy, but marketing a key person along with a product has some strong benefits. Mainly, it creates a secondary brand which is de-anonymising and far more personal than normal branding. If 4 of your top 10 games ever were made by Warren Spector and you happened to hear about a new Spector game you would be interested, right? Well, Warren never really marketed his name that way, but Will Wright, Peter Molyneaux, Tim Schafer, Jonathan Blow, Hideo Kojima, Sid Meier and Richard Garriot did and it paid off for them. (And, of course, it backfired badly for Romero - the moral of the story: don't attach your name until the game's done

Thing is, all the above designers had a number of hit games before they started putting their name above the title; this was Amercan McGee's first game design. He has a reputation for the levels he did for Quake and other games.but there is a huge difference between desiging individual levels and desiging a full game, and it was widley felt that McGee's name on his first game design was very arrogant. There was an attitude of "Get a few hit games, kid, THEN put you name in the title".
Glad that McGee now apparently feels that was a big mistake.

I read some comments that Mcgee itself isn't a very good game creator, and the reason Alice stood out of his other works was because of the team he worked with, who made the biggest effort.
But I am not sure if that's true, there are some games which just got underated such as Bad Day L.A. or however it's called.
But I really wanted to see Mcgee's OZ just for more creepy shit. Too bad it was scrapped, with Wicked there was a good chance for high sales.
I've never played any of McGee's games... but I'll fix this as soon as GOG gets all those. ;)
They can possibly re-release the first Alice game near launch, just like Mafia 2 is doing.

And any luck?
Oh man! I loved this game when it came out. Unfortunately I bet this one gets lost in the big budget dark hero games with which we are inundated these days (God of War, Darksiders, Prototype, etc., etc., etc.). Someone said American McGee was involved, that should help, I'll definitely watch this one. May it not turn out like Deus Ex 2!

Don''t worry, Alice has quite a large fanbase of old PC gamers and even newer who happen to know where to pirate it.
Even it will be get lost by the big console blockbusters, the PC community will be loyal to the series and that will be enough.
I personally would switch the publisher, but I guess it won't happen.
I can speak for everyone that Alice is a true good old game and hope that it gets here.
Maybe I should even try and ask Mcgee again. We both are facebook friends now.

I still have my copy, I do hope folks get a chance to buy this game again, it is truly seminal. Stuff like this is why modern copyright pisses me off so badly, it's our culture dammit! Sorry for the language...
Too bad it'll be unplayable on account of the whole EA thing.

Are you inferring that the new Alice will have horrid DRM due to EA being the publisher? Or are you referring to something else?
