Nah, we each have our likes and dislikes. It's just that personally, I don't like diablo clones because I hate the pointless grinding time sink, and I didn't realize Borderlands 2 was such a clone until it was too late. Other than that, Borderlands 2 is a great game, and it's been proven that I am quite lonely on the dislike of these genre.

The problem with these games is that they are so well received that you end up with a lot of expectations and when you play them.

The same thing happened to me in Bioshock. It's not a bad game by any means, but it just couldn't live up to my expectations. I expected much more from it, and what i found was a bland FPS with terrible shooting mechanics, repetitive gameplay and a terrible story. I would have forgiven these flaws if this was one of those cheap games from City Interactive. But no, this was supposed to be the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, and there was a big hype over it.

From my personal experience, Bioshock was the worst game that i played this year, but i bought it last year, so it doesn't count for the purposes of this thread. To be honest i enjoyed the Syndicate remake much more than Bioshock.
Did not purchase myself, but a friend of mine and I played through Resident Evil 5 local coop and had a blast. Then another friend got us Resident Evil 6 and we could barely endure playing it for an hour...

lol i LOVE bioshock. but i will say i dont really get sucked in by any hype anymore. ive been playing games too long to believe it all ;) but i really liked bioshocks story, albeit not that original, but well executed to a theme we've heard before. skyrim was a game though where i had huge expectations, and they were all met! i think im a game companys perfect consumer. i buy almost all games coming out and am pretty much happy with all of them. what is wrong with me!?

Wrong with you? Hell, nothing at all!!!! I wish I could live that happily.

SimonG: I've become pretty good in avoiding turds, so hardly any big f'ck ups this years. Also, the fact that it isn't 1998 anymore and companies don't flood the market with shitty games also helps. Indies now do that, but I those are for the most part easily recognisable.
AAA titles in general have been far in between this year, and yeah, the Indie scene is a mess right now, a lot of bad games from wannabe people and studios who want to be the next ones to "make it big"

2012 overall was underwhelming for me in general overall, might as well rename it to "Year of the Backlog"
Arkham City is my disappointment. The problem with that game is how the developers want the player to play on more difficult modes like Normal and Hard in order to unlock the skins or NG+, the latter of which is set to Extreme difficulty. I am the kind of player who prefers his games to be fun and easy, nor do I possess actual skill required to tackle the more difficult games. After completing the game on easy and finding that I couldn't use the unlockables, I found myself quite angry at Rocksteady.

:(
Diablo 3 by far. Bought at launch. Full price. ****. Real disappointment. Played a lot of D2 + LOD, but D3 really fell flat for me and i felt i wasted my money :/.
Xcom Enemy Unknown came a close 2nd. Lucky i bought it from GMG when they had their 30% off pre order. Was looking forward to playing, but when i did to me at least it felt kinda dumbed down in terms of fewer options, the play felt a lot more simplified. Didnt feel quite right. Going to give it more time but this is one of the reasons why i rarely buy games at launch. I could go on how Max Payne 3 felt like a waste as well :/. Disappointed in all 3 .Overhyped. Underdelivered. Didn't meet my expectations. Certainly didn't feel like i have got my moneys worth...
My biggest disappointment of the year is most probably Prototype 2. I enjoyed the first one a lot, finding it much better than Infamous, it had it's flaws but it was really fun and it really felt like you were some overpowered super hero.

Then I bought Prototype 2... or should I say Prototype 1.01 as it was just a minor upgrade of prototype 1; minor upgrade but with gazillions of new bugs (including game blocking bug on the first mission that has yet to be corrected), a contrived plot that is just here so that they have an excuse to stay in New York, a new protagonist that manage to be even more unlikeable than Mercer, a boring upgrade system and, final blow, they changed some optional side-quest/challenges into always online "community features" even thought those were perfectly offline in the first game.

No if there is ever a Prototype 3 (which I doubt given Radical when the way of the dodo) I really hope they pretend the second never existed and make a proper sequel of the first.

Is that some pathetic attempt to sound edgy? Dishonored, Spec Ops, Far Cry 3, Mark of the Ninja, AC III, ME 3, X-Com, The Walking Dead, Shogun 2 FotS, Crusader Kings II, Primoria, FTL, Grimrock, Black Ops 2, SR III etc pp

Not to mention the incredibly good deals ranging from the THQ bundle to Amazon competing with the Steam sales.

Not at all, just stating what I think with regards to AAA titles

While some games were pretty good, most of them just didn't do it for me or didn't meet my expectations...
For me it's probably Diablo 3, was a huge fan of D2 and sadly the only thing I'll remember about D3 is auction house farming.

Zookie: What game did you regret purchasing this year?

For me it that Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. It is not a bad game but it is not great either and I feel like I over paid as I bought it soon after its release.
Be very glad you didn't buy (beta) the original. It was a real stinker. FE's only real downside is it's overall difficulty.
