Elmofongo: Random encounters should be the least of your worries the those games man, don't let it alienate you.
I can't bear them, really, I tried each of those games more than once and played for a few hours. I know that running away from battles is an option but it's very annoying too - it doesn't happen on instant like in FFX. Speaking about FFX, i didn't mind encounters in that game cos I was always interested in progressing in the Spehere Grid, whereas in FF6 and 7 I see no point in those battles, sure I get some experience and money but it isn't motivating enough.
Natural Selection 2, a brilliant game but i had a graphics error which i couldn't get fixed with it, and their tech staff never even responded to me, people on the interent's only suggestion was "get a better graphics card".
I cannot understand how my Asus Radeon 7970 shouldn't be able to run NS2... :(
But thats my only misspurchease this whole year weee :)
Hm, lets see.
Inquisitor. I did not hate this game, not at all, but it has some pretty glaring issues. Had those issues been fixed, this would have been a game of the year contender, but as it stands, I think I should have waited for a deeper discount.

The other disappointing games that I've got have (as far as I can remember) all been from bundles & collections.
The Real Texas. Not that I mind owning it, but I've definitely overpaid compared to my opinion of it. It's not a bad game, but IMO not that good either and not what I expected it to be, and I could have bought something much more attractive and fun for the same price.

Demon Stone. My own fault, actually, as I was aware of all the bad reviews, but I was still curious about it. Apart from not running very smoothly on my rig even in the lowest resolution, I hated the locked camera, the rail-roading and the mindless bashing mechanics (maybe it would be more fun in higher resolution, with a gamepad and some perseverance, but I'm sceptical).

Also the Double Fine Bundle on Steam. I have no doubts that Stacking and Costume Quest would be fun to play, but seeing that they don't run smoothly on my current rig, I could have waited just as well for the GOG releases.

SimonG: I believe that we have seen the end of the current console market. Future consoles will be more like the Wii, less graphical hungry and more about interface innovations or seamlessly integrate PC gaming like Steam already does it.
Do you have any good sources on the specs of the upcoming console releases? I read an article in Techradar which said the opposite, that Microsoft are going all out with the hardware. It's probably just rumors at this point, though. Regardless of the specs, I'm sure it will be reflected in the price, so console gamers will no longer be able to claim that their product is more economical.

FTL - That game was so boring from the beginning, and even with a new ship, nothing has changed at all.

rawmilk905: Legend of Grimrock was a big disappointment. I really disliked the rigid tile by tile movement and the lack of third person view.

tomimt: If you thought the game play would have been anything but a throwback on old Dungeon Master style, you really have no one else to blame but yourself.
LOL yeah I found that reasoning very odd too, the throwback to old 80's dungeon crawlers is the exact reason grimrock even exists.

As to the topic at hand; For me it was definitely diablo 3, I'm not a big fan of the always online thing. In particular I wasn't a fan of not being able to show up as offline to people on my friendslist if I wanted to. I've always played the diablo series solo (I'm very slow and methodical in my gameplay and it annoys me to no end that everyone I know seems to prefer the leroy jenkins style of gameplay) so it got annoying having to tell them I didn't want to play with them almost every single damn time I logged in. It got to the point where I just stopped playing it alltogether just to avoid that awkwardness.

I don't buy into any rumors. Heck, modern games still don't look like the "ingame footage" presented with the current PS 3. MS certainly still has more money than Sony to play big daddy. But with smartphones and tablets now also "in the market" people will be less willing to shell out 500$ for something you can only play on. IF the new XBOX comes with a keyboard, Win 8 and office capabilities, then it could be very different however. Then it could replace desktop upgrades for many users.

Well, that would be two games actually.

First is Lego Lord of the Rings for the PS3. The game is absolutely unplayable in the free game/open world mode due to constant freezes. I hope that the developers will make a patch available soon and fix this. But of course I could've waited and bought the game later and depending on how long it takes to fix this game maybe even at a better price.

The second one is Hitman Absolution. I was very sceptical about this game right from the beginning when I first heard about a new Hitman game. I was still sceptical when the game hit the stores and first reviews came in. But somehow I decided to plunge in at one point and bought the Professional Edition. I haven't played much and don't have any intention whatsoever to continue playing this game other than finishing it just for the sake of it; just because I bought it and paid money for it.

At first, I thought the game isn't that bad at all. But after only a hand full of level that are broken by loads of cut-scenes that take away the power from the player and portrait an amateurish 47 instead of a cunning and dangerous Hitman; and after having to continuously hide and flee as a result, I've given up on this game. I also gave up due to the broken disguise system. But even though they've meanwhile fixed this, I disliked the story right from the beginning, right from the first mission and, again, have no motivation to pick this game up again.

So yeah, I shouldn't have bought this game. I wouldn't even pick this game up again on sales.

I'm sometimes disappointed, but I never regret. The closest I come is being sorry I bought a game for a higher price and didn't play it.

Currently I'm somewhat disappointed with DosBox Turbo. I haven't yet managed to run any game on it, and trying to get one to run sucks time (and I still have no results). I still don't regret buying it.

keeveek: Kickstarter, indie games glowing (I mean really good indie games, like FTL, Hotline Miami or Deponia),
Daedalic might not be as big as Blizzard or EA but they are hardly an Indy developer.
Might be flogging a dead horrse here but it's gotta be Black Ops 2... I couldn't imagine how anyone could make a CoD game worse, but they managed it...

Also felt a little let down by Max Payne 3.
Even though it brought me a bit of fun Diablo 3.
Had big shoes to fill and didn't do it.
Torchlight 2 came much closer to what I was hoping for.

Well, what do any of us non-insiders know? That the new generation will have to at least run the new Unreal engine, as I believe the current hardware specs in both the PS3/360 isn't beefy enough? I may have misrea the article I'm thinking of, but there were a few that stated that a new generation of consoles would be needed to make the most use of the engine, bare minimum.

ON TOPIC:

To be honest, I don't think I've gotten anything TOO disappointing as of yet. Well, I take that back, actually. I picked up a used 360 copy of Alpha Protocol, and it kept bugging out on me. Seems like the only time it'll run fine is if I run it after just booting the console up. Otherwise, if it's been running for an hour or two, the game runs in super slowmo. Made it instantly unplayable for me. I should pick up a fully patched version for PC, I guess, and try again. :(

No doubt Retro City Rampage. Had been following the game for years. I usually love open world stuff and I am child of 80's (like probably many here) this should have just the right thing for me. Sadly no, game is just dreadful to play. Music and the visuals are just not enough. Shame that the guy couldn't come up with one single own idea.
