rampancy: "Craptop"? Hardly. If you scrounge around places like CL or Kijiji for old RAM and IDE hard drives, you'd have yourself a great Ubuntu machine. Hell, with specs like that it'd be perfect for Lubuntu, and you could use WINE or your XP copy running in VirtualBox to run your GOG titles. If you really don't need a machine like that, it'd be really awesome if you, say, gave it to someone (like a senior or a single parent) needing a computer for someone with low-modest computing needs.

I did something similar with a nice IBM ThinkPad that I scored for $6 (!) on CL. I love to tinker with old hardware, and I got a chance to help out a nice little old lady.
Well, everything's relative. You make a good point about upgrading, but I've never done anything of that sort before. I would certainly consider doing that if I knew how. I'm just saying that my computer, as it stands right now, is by no means a (modern) gaming machine. And if I did get a better computer, I wouldn't just through this one away.
Interesting! I will put in my entry soon.
I could do with a better GPU its a 4870 1 gig with major overheating issues

As for spare parts I could donate a stick of kingston DDR2 2Gig (KHX8500D2K2/4G)

Im putting my other bits together for my neighbour, they're buying a cheapy case and some other ram to fit the Mobo (its gonna be a shit pc but its just for word processing no internet or anything like that,)

If its not silly money I'll pay but I need to know where to send it to. (also international shipping take up to 25 working days)
I could DEFIANTLY use the ram and the Vid card. If no one else needs it of course. Any idea on how much that would cost to ship to the US though? I'm currently ridiculously broke and my current state of employment seems to be shitty at best (I haven't gotten ANY hours in the past 3 weeks) but I might be able to somehow come up with the cost.

Well i'm in the US so i'm guessing it wouldn't be too much. I would advise getting something like a paypal and wiring me whatever the cost is(check your local post office and tell them it's a fragile item/etc) via paypal or whatever. Then I would use that to get a box and such from the post office and use their auto-scale(where you weigh and mail your own stuff instead of standing in line.) and boxes/insulation to mail it.

That is if OP thinks it's ok and all.

Also btw the card needs a bit of dusting but should otherwise be okay. It was working fine when I replaced it(for a better card) a month ago. I still have it in the new card's box and static free plastic wrapper.

gotcha how about we wait just 1 day and if no one else needs it more than u, than reaver894 will send you the stuff, :) also spread the word around the gog forum about this thread thanks
I think I'm going to try adding more ram to my computer, using the ram from my laptop that always blue screens on me. I just wanted to ask if installing that ram might damage my computer in some way, like if the ram has gone bad or something. Sorry if this is a total noob question, but I just want things cleared up before I go messing around with my only working computer.

If the ram types are the same(DDr/DDR2/etc), and it's from a laptop to a laptop, then it should be fine.

How would I go about finding out what ram type I have?

Look up the two laptop's models/makes online. The info should be on a sticker or panel on the pc/laptop. Like mine is a gateway gt5662(modified)....so I would look up that name and the word specs(so gt5662 specs) to find info on what ram my pc uses and what it can support.

Simply look up the two laptop's names with the word specs next to each of them and see what the mobo supported/included ram types and sizes are.

Some links gotten this way on google will lead to more or less detailed info though so be sure to look through 2-3 different links for each computer and compare the info and get back to us.

ok, I think they're both ddr, but I'm not 100% sure if they are, as one of my searches didn't come up with very definitive results. Would it damage the computer in any way if they are different, or would it just not work?

If the types are different they might not even fit in each other's slots. If the bottom pins look the same length/etc on both then you should be fine as long as you take out/put in the ram in the right direction and way.

Use a free app called everest to determine your pc's ram stats(on the working one.) Ram should be under one of the sections, including ram type/speed/etc. Find that info and report back to us.

Oh, ok. Should work then, I'll give it a try in a minute. Thanks for the help!
