Sounds good. Since raiders and the like gave good karma the only way I found to actually get reliably evil was to set off the nuke.
It would be nice if only quest-related enemies gave karma. Killing some random raiders out in the wastes is pure self-defence. It's only a "good deed" by proxy (i.e. one less raider for the general populace to worry about).

Ever joined the slavers in Paradise City? Ive yet to do that Im working on a good karma, i went though the dialog tree but realized i would need to become a slaver to enter

As far as I remember, your reputation falls low but I think it's possible to raise it back up.

The easiest way to get low karma is to steal everything, cups, dishes, garbage, whatevs

If you want to enter Paradise City and keep your karma simply blow the bastards away. You'll actually get good karma for killing some of them.

i guess i can go have some fun wiping the slavers out... its not like there on santa's nice list or anything >:)

Even most reviewers who ranked Fallout 3 high pointed out that writing was inferior not only to the original Fallouts, but also to most recent games.

I've heard people complain about the writing before but in all honesty the game is so solid and enjoyable you just go with it. It's like an Arnold movie, dumb but enjoyable.

It's definitely enjoyable, despite the obvious flaws. The exploration aspect is it's greatest strenght. The world is just stunning.
That's why I'm so optimistic about New Vegas. With visuals created by Bethesda and writing we would expect from Obsidian it's gonna be so much better then F3. I just hope they gonna do something with character develpoment system, which was just horribly unbalanced. Especially that the level cap is going to be 30 again.

It seems like Fallout only with the Gothic premise of dealing with the power struggles involving a few factions and ultimately siding with one.

It was pretty bad at times. I remember that confrontation with the "President" and expecting all kinds of awesome dialogue but instead getting, frankly, complete crap. The "kill yourself" thing was more poorly written than in that Star Trek episode from the 60s with the same ending.
I am not one to attack Fallout 3 a lot, I think it has upsides and downsides, areas where it surpasses the originals and areas it lacks, but writing is definately one where it lacks, just as Oblivion lacked in writing. Whoever wrote Morrowind must have left the company, frankly.
I fully expect New Vegas to be Fallout 3 with much better writing and quest design, which honestly sounds like a 10/10 game to me.
