monkeydelarge: You are missing the point of Norwegian prisons. They are not there to punish people with torture until they are so twisted and evil, they make the Joker from Batman look like a nice guy and then set them free. They are there to try to turn criminals into civilized people.

sauvignon1: I'll need more info, but right now it sounds like they pamper you.
That's because you live in the USA where most people live like shit. Our country also has prisons that aren't really prisons but lower levels of hell. So yeah, if you compare hell to Norwegian prisons then it looks like pampering.

I can't believe this. If someone posts "It was cold out today." You know who would blame it on government spending. :O

That's how jails are in all nordic wellfare states. Goal is more to re-educate criminals so they'll become productive members of society when released. They even get vacations (yes, you read that right) and get to work out of prison unguarded. Obviously there's requirements for both.

Some criminals abuse the system by committing crimes during summer and spending rest of the year in prison. Couple murderers also did not return from their vacation.

Go away, troll.
I approve of how Norway handles criminals...however, this particular inmate deserves nothing more than standard accommodations. The good stuff should go to folks that are willing to work towards rehabilitation.

Titanium: Well, if we judge every idea, model or institution by it's most extreme cases, then I would like to provide a list of everything, ever, and how it isn't working so well.
Not sure if you're serious or not, but I was being sarcastic while referring to this specific case and this case only.

Hunger strike is no joke.
If the demands he expressed do indeed include a replacement of the PS2 under an extortion threat of "I'll go on hunger strike until you deliver or I die", then the rehabilitation model is ineffective in his case (it actually sounds like he's mocking it), no matter how good it might be in general.

EDIT: And I just read P1na's post - completely agree.

He wants his Playstation 2 replaced with something better. They should give him a Nintendo Wii. :P I highly doubt the Mario and Just Dance games will be enough to entertain him.

gbaz69: So, does Norway have no homeless and no unemployed people?

I don't understand why someone in jail should have it better off then unemployed, homeless, straving people.

Here in USA, he would be on death row for killing 77 people.

Randalator: Having cost the US more money during his trial alone than Breivik will cost Norway during his trial and an entire lifetime of imprisonment combined. Don't you think that money would be better spent on, say, the unemployed, the homeless, or the starving?
Yes spending money on the unempoyed/homeless/staving would be better then spending it on a mass murderer.
That was my point... just didn't out right state it.

I wonder if people have commited crimes, just to goto jail, to get a roof over their heads and food to eat.

Foreigners, yes. What I mean by foreigners is people who have traveled to Scandinavia, just to go to prison there.

That's three times I've been called a troll in the past few days, and all by the same person. I'll let the forum decide.

For fuck's sake....the mass murderer wants a PS 3? Fine. Hollow out a controller, fill it with concrete and metal, then beat him to death with it. Stick a Post-It note on what's left of his head saying "You wanted it? You got it."

There's no death penalty in norway so lifetime imprisonment without change of parole is only alternative.

What was the purpose of this post? Sympathy? If you don't want to be called a troll anymore then stop trolling. It's as simple as that.

You could...you know...actually start posting posts worth reading and finally contribute to this community? I've never seen such a post from you. All I've seen from you is jokes(I admit, some of them are funny), troll posts and other kinds of garbage posts.

You logged into a thread about a mass murderer in Europe going on hunger strike to complain about government spending in the United States. And I'm the troll?
I can't really understand all the chaos. He wants the PS3? He won't get it. If he keeps on striking, he'll get weaker, so he'll be forced to eat something in the end - or fed with a I.V.

I can't also see how someone who killed 77 people (and that's totally mad) could be rehabilitated in just a couple of years, so this is definitely not a fault of the system, in my opinion.
