stoicsentry: I believe in rehabilitation, too, but WTF Norway?
avatar
Petrell: I tought he got life without change of parole so what's the point of rehabilitation? And send him to Siberian prison camp or alternatively north korean one.
That does not exist in Norway. The longest you can get is 21 years. Though there is one exception to this
The indeterminate penalty (civilian penal code), called "preventive detention" (Norwegian: forvaring), is set at up to 21 years' imprisonment, with no eligibility for parole for a time period not exceeding 10 years. If the prisoner is still considered dangerous after serving the original sentence, the detention can be extended by five years at a time. Renewal of the detention every five years can in theory result in actual life imprisonment. Preventive detention is used when the prisoner is deemed a danger to society and there is a great chance of his committing violent crimes in the future.[2] However, after the minimum time period has elapsed, the offender can petition for parole once every year, and this may be granted if it is determined that he is no longer a danger to society.
So it is in theory possible that Breivik will never get out.

Anyway, I really hope that they don't give in. He is just trying to get media attention again. Give in and he will do it again. If things goes out of hand, they'll just have to forcefully feed him.
avatar
awalterj: Sure, you can't take away everything enjoyable, if you did then prisoners will revolt and then you have no other option than to put them down violently which is something you were trying to avoid in the first place. However, give a little finger and they will take the entire hand. A good prison director has to be able to find the exact right balance between not being too cruel and not being too lenient. Good behavior from prisoners should be rewarded but throwing tantrums should certainly not, under any circumstances. I'm going to go as far as to classify serious things like hunger strike as temper tantrums if it's about non-essential things like entertainment options.
I disagree on anything that is considered a luxury even for the regular citizen. Horseback riding is something many normal people dream of and simply can't afford. By giving a convicted rapist free horseback lessons that the taxpayer has to pay for but can't even afford for themselves, you are severely sabotaging rehabilitation as an institution because of the public anger this creates.
avatar
monkeydelarge: Giving prisoners the opportunity to go horse back riding shouldn't create public anger because they should understand it is for helping these prisoners rehabilitate. There is something wrong with the public if they are angry because prisoners get to go horse back riding and they dont. That kind of public anger should be ignored because it's simply petty jealousy. And if it can't be ignored, they should be encouraged to not be so childish. That would be like raging because handicapped people get nice parking spots reserved for them while everyone else gets bad parking spots far away from the super market. In fact, a society full of childish people would make things far worse in a country than people having to give up some tax money so prisoners can go horse back riding so that they can learn to be happy and peaceful people. Don't believe me? Come and visit the USA and you will see what I mean. You will see what a country is like when most of it's citizens are nothing but overgrown babies.
Another self-hater.... Do you guys have a club or something?

This is the impression I often get from American television and other media.

But when I'm out walking or travelling or shopping, I find that it isn't true at all.
avatar
jamyskis: People rail against such establishments because they don't satisfy their warped, vigilantistic sense of justice. They have no sense or understanding of actual justice in the real sense of the word.
This is a blatant stereotype that is often incorrect. In particular, no one here is making this argument. Instead, people have expressed concern that rehabilitation programs seem to be badly managed and waste taxpayers' money on things that are obviously stupid or irrelevant to teaching how to live a moral life.

Yeah, the gap between what gets shown on TV and what actually happens IRL is mindbogglingly large for the US.

I understand that you want everyone to be helped and happy. I agree. Unfortunately, rehabilitation costs money, and not just a little bit so it certainly is subject to healthy debate. Now this may come as a surprise, but even in first world countries like Switzerland and Norway money is of limited supply. As things are right now in Switzerland, more money is being spent on the therapy of the perpetrators than on the therapy of the victims. Is this fair? And keep in mind that any money spent on rehabilitation programs for criminals is going to be missing from other public services. Who are you going to save on, the disabled, the elderly, please tell me? And no, there really isn't enough money for everything, you spend money here it's missing there and vice versa.
I'm all for having basic rehabilitation programs as long as the statistics show solid results, but not at the cost of other social services. So far, rehabilitation programs have shown good results here in Switzerland with relapse percentages being quite low except for sexual violence offenders where results are far away from being satisfactory. You may not think the relapse percentages are much to be worried about until someone you know falls victim to one of the relapsing offenders. If it happens to be your girlfriend, wife, daughter, son, mother or even yourself that turns out to be the victim of someone who was released from therapy and deemed by experts to be 'no longer any danger', you would definitely change your opinion very quickly. Btw, I don't personally know any victims so my opinion isn't influenced by personal revenge fantasies of any kind, just being pragmatic.
And as I mentioned earlier, public anger isn't something you can ignore. It's irrelevant whether you personally feel people are being childish and jealous and whether the anger is justified in parts or at all because it's a reality that whenever you have policies in place that anger too many people too much, there will be real consequences. Not just in Sim City and Tropico.

As for calling the majority of your fellow Americans childish 'overgrown babies'...let me guess, that includes everyone who dares to have a different opinion than you? I should probably ignore such statements as being somewhat non debatable due to not making much sense in the first place but if it must be talked about, here's my humble two cents: I've lived in the U.S. twice for several years and have found people to be essentially the same as everywhere else. Never had any private problems worth mentioning, not once. What is worth mentioning though is that the U.S. is still functioning 10 times better than 90% of the countries I've visited so far. Even though you say it's full of (quote) 'overgrown babies' (end quote)

edit: '10 times better than 90%' is of course hyperbolic but rhetorics aside, I think the U.S. does indeed function better than most countries I've been to, including some 1st world countries.

The guy kills 70+ people, mostly children, preaches an insane manifesto, and shows no remorse. If he is ever released back into the wild, their justice system has failed their people. Miserably. Maybe their approach does work for the majority of average cases, but theres always special cases that need to be handled differently.

if he is ever released, i think he'll be murdered in no time

i know killing is not the option, but at at very rare times, people just need to die, for everyones sake as they are incurable and downright bloodthirsters. He is among those no doubt. Until he recieved his lead between the eyes, bin laden was on top of the list of people who simply deserved death and brevik is on it.

monkeydelarge: Exactly! It's nice to know, I'm not the only one intelligent enough to see people screaming for "justice" for what it really is... The desire to see people suffer, the desire to see people die to satisfy the dark twisted part that dwells deep inside every human being.

Real life is not Tropico. So what if people are angry? It's not like they will rise up against you. If their basic needs are met, you have nothing to worry about. All they will do is bitch bitch bitch and that is it.

No, what I mean is the majority of my fellow Americans are childish overgrown babies. Just because someone doesn't agree with me doesn't mean they are "childish" in my eyes. I know how to use words properly. I use the English dictionary whenever I'm not 100% sure what a word means. If you don't like the facts, don't insult my character. Just accept them or ignore them. And if you continue to make such insulting assumptions about me simply because you don't like the facts I present to you, I won't be able to take you seriously anymore. Then this debate between you and me is over.

I certainly hope you are not one of the overgrown babies too. This country has enough of them. And to say that people are the same everywhere, shows a lot of ignorance. If people were the same everywhere, then the Earth would have one culture, one religion. If people were the same everywhere, there wouldn't be so much hate and fighting between others. Have you ever thought that the reason why the people you've met abroad and your online friends are not so different from you is because people tend to attract those who are similar to them? If you go to a different country and meet people who aren't much different than the people you would find back home, it's not because everywhere, people are the same. You just never ran into the people who are different than you, different from Americans because they don't want anything to do with you because you are too foreign for them. And no, I'm not saying there is something wrong with being an American. I'm just saying the majority of Americans are overgrown babies.

Don't judge me because of my avatar. I've encountered a lot of trolls here with some very serious looking avatars so what does that say about avatars... The examples you've shown only prove that people will rise up if their basic needs are not met or their government becomes too tyrannical. Not because they are angry with the how prisoners are treated(how their tax money is being spent). People won't rise up if they feel like have a lot to lose. I agree with one thing you have said though. Prisoners shouldn't take up so much resources to a point it makes non prisoners, suffer like the elderly. That is just wrong.

PS
The USA is a huge country. You say you lived here twice but where? If you live in the right places, you will avoid the majority I speak of... You will avoid the people with the "I got mine, fuck everyone else mentality"... And like I told mari29. People tend to attract those who are like minded wherever they go. So you can't really see what the majority of people somewhere are like if you just look at the people you've encountered and got close to while on vacation someplace. You have to spend many years living somewhere to get the bigger picture, usually. And you need to have enough intelligence and wisdom to able to truly see the bigger picture. You also have to keep in mind, I was born and raised in this country. I've lived in many different states. I've had many jobs that forced me to deal with hundreds of Americans everyday. Everyone I know here is an American. I know this country like I know my hands and my laptop's keyboard, okay? You also have to keep in mind, Americans are very two faced so in person, it's extremely hard to figure people out in this country. You could know someone here for a year or two and not know what kind of person he or she truly is. It's extremely easy for an American to smile whenever they see you, show sympathy for you every time you share your pain with them, spend time with you doing something entertaining while at the same time, thinking the world would be a better place if you died in a fire.
