So Nvidia are also getting into the console business it seems. It's portable but not exactly the fit in your pocket kind. Has HDMI out so you can connect it to a TV easily. The system runs normal Android with no locks or restrictions on it.

Sounds very good but all I can see i a big xbox/ps controller with a display glued to it. I like the streaming of games from your PC to it. I've been wanting something like this sometimes :D
Seeing how nVidia abandoned Tegra 2 so fast when Tegra 3 was unveiled, I would not be surprised if Tegra 3 gets the same treatment with Tegra 4 just around the corner. All this just means is that when Tegra 5 comes out, Tegra 4 will be pretty much dead.
Not Windows, not interested. This is no substitute for a console either. There simply aren't enough proper games on Android to make this worthwhile. If you really want to use Android with a controller, get something like the GameKlip.

As for the PC streaming feature that will inevitably have input lag and other issues since it's over Wi-Fi. An HDMI cable plus your choice of controller is a cheaper and better experience.

Same first thought. It looks like an xbox 1 controller with a smart phone taped to it.

Indeed. Also a nice insult to the Ouya (Tegra 3) to announce this before it's even out since this is Tegra 4 based.

Meanwhile, all I can think of is FUCK YEAH PORTABLE EMULATION SYSTEM

Fixed it for you.
Nice, me want.

Here is Nvidia's article
See, I'm hoping this expands into 5-inch screens attached to random household appliances. Think of the possibilities!
ok sounds interesting may look into this further when it is released.
That's what I'm talking about!

I guess it will cost a lot more than Ouya or GameStick, but that's the way to do a real Android console. Open Android, game streaming from PC, wireless display...

For those saying it can't compete with a real console, I won't be surprised if it could. From the Tegra 4 specs it looks like it's encroaching on Xbox 360 or PS3 territory (Certainly Wii U).

I'll be waiting for the price. That would affect my perception, but I'm sure that there will be people who buy this regardless, because it has a really convincing feature set.

Edit: I think that this and the "GabeCube" will change the face of gaming forever.

It looks like something available for purchase in the late '80s.

Still, output looks pretty nice :)

It's not the specs (Tegra 4 is definitely capable), it's the games. Your Skyrims and Call of Duties and whatnot largely don't exist for Android except in very simplified forms built primarily (or exclusively) for touch input and centred around short-term play. Proper games won't become more common until portable/console-style Android devices gain sufficient popularity, but such devices will be a hard sell without suitable games to run on them.

NVIDIA is well known for working with developers, even paying developers, to produce products which take advantage of its hardware. If the Tegra 4 is capable it won't surprise me if NVIDIA will work with companies producing console titles (especially its TWIMTBP partners) to convert them to work on the Shield (and other Tegra 4 devices).

As for success, it remains to be seen, but NVIDIA certainly hit a lot of nails on the head with Shield, so there's a chance it will succeed even without a big initial rollout. Still, I won't be surprised if NVIDIA has up its sleeve a launch lineup or at least a game or two showing the full power of the Tegra 4.
