Alone in the strange world of Pagan, the Avatar has to bring the battle to the Guradian.

Ultima™ 8 Gold Edition, the last 2D cRPG in the famous Ultima series, is available now for only $5.99.

Ultima 8 featured “a closer blend of fantasy and reality than ever before--real-world physics and game play” (that’s from the game box!) including platform running at several speeds, jumping unto stepping stones and transverse cliffs, walking on ledges etc. Also, Avatar is left alone, without any RPG companions, and that makes the game extremely difficult, while most of the enemies are both extremely hard to kill and extremely deadly. The graphics are flat-out gorgeous in their retro glory, and the well-detailed fluid animations hold up greatly even today after 18 years from release. The combat is a real change from the usual Ultima fare, with great fluidity, and tons of actiony goodness that make this game a great entry title into the series for fans of more action-centric RPGs.

Great graphics, sound, storyline, and special effects are what’s good about Ultima 8, and what’s best is that it’s available right now only on GOG.com for $5.99.

Speaking of Spoony, it's probably worth saying what he did (well, paraphrase), in that a lot of the ill will towards Ultima 8 comes because the patch we have on the GOG release is one of the most important patches in gaming history. The game is brutal without it, and who could get patches in the mid-nineties? That's how you get a bad reputation. No game today could compare, since no matter how bad the problem, the patch can be out to everyone in a weekend, where some people never knew the patch existed for U8. For most gamers, Ultima 8 was forever broken.

I still think it's pretty bad, though, but if you like pointless jumping sequences...

Didn't they patch out the jumping sequence leading up to the Hall of the Mountain King? The one with the disappearing tiles/islands in the water/whatver they were called...
I finally broke down and watched that spoony link. Kinda silly... He is obviously being overly dramatic because that seems to be his thing. If that video is truly his opinion, then more power to him, but I wish everyone around here wouldn't take it so seriously... Pagan is a solid game from an above solid game series. No reason to not enjoy it.

They fixed the jump bugs in the patch, if you can trust in Spoony* (he mentions that in the review). But it's not perfect: you can still fall in the water and die instantly (even if you clicked at the right place in the platform).

* = I haven't played this, so I can't tell you for sure.

To all the newcomers to Ultima VIII:Make sure to pick up the Slayer mace while in the Tombs.

It's a glowing mace. Can't miss it.
Out of curiosity, did they ever explained why every chest explodes when you open it?
I remember U8 being kinda fun, especially going around town trying to rob every building without being caught. You had to climb around, wait for the right time when the guards were asleep or elsewhere etc. There was all kinds of unexplained stuff, like a house in the woods full of children and spiders or something weird like that. Anyway, yeah, never finished it, was way too buggy, the catacombs were a ridiculous maze, the jumping sucked. Don't think I'll play it a second time.

SimonG: It is minimum system requirements, Windows 7 is supported.

dirtyharry50: You do not know that. It does not say so, therefore the question.
It says so on the gamepage?!

What was so fun seing every freaking chest in the game explode after you touch it? :P
And I just noticed you (yeah GOG, you) configured the game to run with Adlib MIDI music instead of Sound Blaster. I noticed that trying to capture my gamaplay on video (DOSBox won't capture MIDI). The Sound Blaster music is just as good or even better than the MIDI on Pagan. You should definitely change that for default, because it is practically impossible to do it in a user-friendly way.

I did it my way to tape this classic moment of exploration: http://youtu.be/SXhmhPrzTIA

the exploding chests were ridiculous but I learned to stay far far away when opening anything, I would even move chests behind doors so I could open them safely from behind.
As an outsider, all I know about Ultima VIII is that it represents a steep dive in quality, something that would somehow become even worse (albeit in a different way) with Ultima IX. Thus, I think I will pass, though that does remind me that I really should give Ultima VII another shot.
U8 had great world design, graphics and awesome music. Very atmospheric. Great writing in times. I think that if it hadn't been marketed as an Ultima title it might have been a real success.

Still, can I even dream of a GOG version of Ultima IX? U9 was not included in any of these fancy collections back in the day and it's difficult to find now. It wasn't an entirely horrible game, just not as good as the rest of the series. And, heck, Morrowind kind of came from the left field and trampled it, so now everyone's playing The Elder Scrolls instead. =)

Oh, and Worlds of Ultima games were also difficult to find in collections - those would be awesome. *dreams*

So it does now! It has been corrected. Windows 7 was not originally noted on the game page which was why I made the comment questioning if it had been an oversight. At the time of my post, it only indicated XP and Vista on the gamepage. I'm glad to see that's been fixed.
