Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

DreamedArtist: How good is Ys 1&2 ? on the fence thinking on getting this :/
Personally, I loved them.
Combat is pretty simplistic, but fun. The bosses are a nice change of pace and can be pretty challenging.
Music is absolutely killer.

If you're not sure, I'd check out a some gameplay if I were you.

Reever: Have no experience at all with JRPGs (although I bought Septerra Core, haven't played it yet though), but I've heard people praising these games, so off to my wishlist they went.

My question is, how much story is there in them? Or is it all action and gameplay?
*DISCLAIMER: Septerra Core is not representative of all JRPGs - it only is a particular flavor (if you will).*

Personally I loved the story in Septerra Core. Granted you will recognize elements of Earth's many different religious beliefs (people, places, events, etc.) but they were made into a very unique mix with Septerra.

That being said, the only part I disliked (and probably the aspect most criticized) is the unnecessarily-drawn-out combat. It can be considered grindy, but even when you have leveled up to the point where you one-hit enemies using a character's lowest-powered attack they just seem to take much longer to finish than they should.

The good news is that you can at least spot your foes on the map and may be able to avoid them. The bad news is that such occasions are fewer than you might like (i.e. the map design forces you to go through them).

Give it a shot, but definitely consider how you feel about combat once you have experienced it a few times versus how motivated you are for the story. IMHO that will determine how likely you are to finish it.

jackster79: One last question: is this mechanic in all of the Ys games, or just the early ones?
avatar
Grargar: The bumping is unique to YS I+II. Oath in Felghana and Origin feature more typical sword combat.
That means there is hope yet that I may get to enjoy at least one game in this series! Yay!

Still, I need to try out the bump mechanic to see if my opinion of it has changed over the last 20+ years...

rtcvb32: Well glancing at Wiki this now gives us half the games...

Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen
Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter
Ys III: Wanderers From Ys / The Oath in Felghana
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun / The Dawn of Ys
Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim
Ys Origin
Ys Seven
Ys: Memories of Celceta

rtcvb32: Seeing as Origin is a prequel, this gives us the first 4 games, while 5-7 & Memories aren't yet here. But the other half of the games in 3-6 months makes for heavy anticipation :) I'm sure 4 games will keep you busy for a quite a while... Now i'm tempted to pull out Origins that i happened to get at HB a while back...
Being someone who ahs followed this game for years since the original Ys1 for the PC ( EGA, CGA and TANDY graphics! ) I know that Ys4 and Ys5 both made for the SNES, were never released in north america. To this date that still hasnt' changed :(

Ys6 and Ys7 if I remember correctly were released for the PS2 / Vita and did reach north america.

Sadly I have my doubts we'll ever see 4 or 5 outside of japan :(

Gengar78: Whats up with this weird trend of putting a plus sign at the end of titles? Plus what exactly? Plus a free copy of Freddi Fish 2?...in that case, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
The reason is there was Ys1 and Ys2 released as separate games. Then there was Ys 1 + 2 Eternal, a remake, then there was Ys1 + Ys2 Chronicles. And now this is the latest version Ys1 + 2 Chronicles +, which i think just has some added features.

The first game has essentally the first 'chapter' of the game compeltley new, it wans't in the original Ys1
As for Ys3, When you left town in the SNES version you went directly to your destination, there was no wilderness like this one has.

IMO both these additions add ot the game :)

As sad as that seems, this is where fan translation groups come in handy :)

Reminds me, the Slayers SNES game never came to the US either... took them a few years to translate it, mostly due to limitations of how to store the translated text as i recall (and was their first rom hacking, which they eventually fixed).
Happy to see all the currently available Ys games are here on GOG. Now let's get Ark of Napishtim on here and Steam quickly come on XSEED! :)

At the very least the fourth game finally got made by Falcom and released as Ys Memories of Celceta in 2012 for the Vita :)
Thanks! I'll put them in my wishlist for now.
Alright, the games are now in my account where they belong. =) I do have to wonder, though, why Ys I and Ys II are separate entries. GOG has plenty of multi-game collections and, for those, all the installers are under one entry. I'm puzzled as to why it is different for Ys I&II Chronicles+.

Also, I have to agree with some of the previous comments in that the cover used for the game on the bookshelf is lackluster compared to the actual original cover.

Maybe to give you the option of downloading only one of them? This is also the case for Mortal Kombat 1+2+3 and TIE Fighter and X-Wing.
Did you really have to use the word 'threequel'? Ouch >.<
Hello all.
I have a question on "how to change character in configuration" for Ys I and II Chronicles +.
When launching config.exe, Feena comes up for Ys I and Lilia for Ys II respectively, and right-clicking them shows "change characters"
h:t:t:p:/ / I 6 6.tinypic.com/v8eq7o.jpg[
After I beated Ys I at HARD level, I tried to change it to another character but in vain.
I would like to know how this "change character" works and how to get another character for it, maybe "Reah"?
Anyone has a clue ?
