Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

If you're looking for jRPG charm with action-RPG gameplay Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin are here to please, DRM-free on GOG.com. Cyraxpt: Ys I & II Chronicle is terrible, for you to attack the enemies you have to approach them and it will automatically attack them, i didn't play more than 20m (if much).

jackster79: So what happens? You approach, combat ensues automatically, and then what? You hope your PC AI has enough sense to know when to retreat or make "smart" decisions based on survivability?

Or you just hope he/she/it emerges victorious and that no other enemies approach before you have had a chance to heal?

I guess what I am asking is: Does the player control more than just where the Ys character goes and who he/she speaks to?
Uhm, not sure how "deep" the combat is further on but nothing happens, so that you understand, there's enemies on the screen and you just approach them and the character attacks, you are only controling the movement of the character (let's say that you're playing with the gamepad, you only use the stick to move the character and fight).

Watching that video (around 7.53 in case the link doesn't take you there) you would assume that you're using the stick to move around and one of the buttons to attack but no, only the stick.

I must admit, these are some of the most compelling releases that GOG has ponied up in a while for me. But I already have Ys Origin DRM-free AND on Steam, and I have Ys Chronicles and Oath in Felghana both on Steam and on PSP. While I'd love a DRM-free PC copy, it's too much of an outlay to be justifiable.
Awesome release! I have very fond memories of YS I & II for the TurboDuo. It has some of the best game music in a game for an old series. I highly recommend it even though the story and graphics are not high end. It's still a very enjoyable action rpg with some great anime cut scenes.

I would happily rebuy this on gog if I had not already own a bunch of the console and steam versions =/ Sadly with the constant hit of new publishers I have little fun money to spend on quadruple dipping on this. I will happily buy when on sale next time and more expendable funds. I'm very happy to see the Ys series here and DRM free ^_^

The price isn't that bad at all. I remember paying $50 for Ys 1&2. The other Ys games varied from $40 or so, although most were the limited editions =/ Of course those were the console versions....

Nice! Origin + Oath at least are wonderful games if you like the genre. Origin is my personal favourite.

Somewhat grindy but if you're in the mood for a challenge, the bar is set quite high on the later difficulty modes. I pumped ~80 hours into Origin and still didn't 100% the game (PC died and not got back into it yet.) This is mostly with replaying the game on different characters/difficulties and the bonus challenges though. Lots of extra stuff to do if you're of that completionist mindset.

Very much recommended.

Not regionally priced? :P
Wow... That's a blast from the past. I still have my Ys 1-3 PC Engine CD-Roms.

Gengar78: Whats up with this weird trend of putting a plus sign at the end of titles? Plus what exactly? Plus a free copy of Freddi Fish 2?...in that case, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
In the case of YS 1 and 2 i think its because they included some additional stuff from the PSP version that was not in the orginal PC version.
Migth be wrong, cant recall.

Not sure if il buy these games here.
Already have it on steam and PSP except Origin and i think buying them a third time is a bit overkill even if i love the YS series.

Muttala: Felghana is also EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, and is generally considered by fans to be the hardest game in the entire series.
Ahh.. that's actually good to know.

My only Ys title is Felghana on PSP, and I only got as far as the 2nd boss because it was pretty hard.

Not that difficulty bothers me (will get back to the game at some point), but I guess I thought Oath of Felghana was a typical example of an Ys title. But it sounds like it isn't!
Well, this is great. I wanted these games here on GOG.com for some time. However, I have bought all of these on Steam a while back. I will want the DRM-free versions some time in the foreseeable future, so I will wishlist all of these for now.

Even so, it is still good to see the hits keep coming. Keep it up, GOG!!

So buy Origin. :P
It's the best one of the three.

I can't speak to how the remakes play, but the classic Ys gameplay is essentially a top-down version of how Joust plays: You approach the enemy and you want to be slightly off-center, then you ram them and knock them backward and run their health down. Assuming they're strong enough to take a few hits, they'll reorient themselves to center on you, and then if you want to avoid taking damage you have to re-adjust your angle to get back off-center and charge again. It sounds weird but it's actually a pretty interesting and fast-paced way to play and they do some creative things with how you have to win the boss fights. You also get some magic later on that allows you to do distance attacks.
Man, GOG is on a roll.
Wishlisted for now.
Much appreciation to XSEED for getting the games here and with a flat price!

I wrote to XSEED a few times asking if they'd bring the Ys games here and they said they were open to the idea although they had no specific plans. Can't afford to buy them all but I'll buy one now to show my support.
