Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

If you're looking for jRPG charm with action-RPG gameplay Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin are here to please, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 25% launch discount will last for one week, until Thursday, February 26th, at 10:59 AM GMT.

MIK0: Oh, please, remove the cover for Ys I & II from the game shelf. It's not even the original cover and doesn't suit the game at all. I don't know where did you get that. Even the Origin cover is strange, but at least is in the same mood of the original.
Can you make a pic of the covers, I'd like to take a look.
Where do you start with these? 40 dollars might be a bit much after the past few weeks for me though.

Ignore 1+2 play Origin first as it's a prequel.
Every game except 2 has a seperate storyline.

I'd advise to do the opposite and play Ys I & II before diving into Origin, at least if you care about the story in these games.

In the end I'd say it's best to play Oath in Felghana first just because the gameplay is more "traditional" in the sense you press a button to attack rather than the bump system used in Ys I+II. Plus since it's a fairly standalone story, you'll probably enjoy it more in the end. I'd recommend playing YsI+II before playing Origin though if you want to follow the lore present in Origin a little easier. Plus playing the games this way adds a couple more ah-ha moments when you play them this way.

Most people would not bother finishing those as the combat is incredibly boring.

All the more reason to play Chronicles first. If you played Origins first, playing Chronicles next will feel like a major step down in gameplay making for an even better chance of someone abandoning them halfway through.

Which I why I said not to bother at all. If something is boring to play through it doesn't matter when you play it. It will be boring either way.
As someone who's played both origins, and books 1 & 2 to completion, I would say play books 1 & 2 first. Origins is designed around the idea that the player has played books 1 & 2 already. It will spoil some of the early story mystery in books 1 & 2 if you play Origins first. I would also say that Origins will also reveal some late game plot of books 1 & 2 if you play it first too. So if you are a type of person who hates spoilers, I would avoid Origins until you play books 1 & 2. If not feel free to play Origins first.

As a side note, The Oath in Felghana is a separate story from both Origins and Books 1 & 2, although it does contain some references to Books 1 & 2 as it has the same protagonist. These references can be ignored if you really want to as they do not impact the game's storyline.
Will definitely be picking up Ys I & II Chronicles+ at some point.

SirPrimalform: Much appreciation to XSEED for getting the games here and with a flat price!
Not quite flat. Just not more expensive anywhere than the US, comrade.
Alright. Thanks GOG. Now I can delete the Ys game in my Steam wishlist. DRM-Free all the way here.

Ys I and Ys II appear separate on the shelf?

The art work they're using certainly isn't bad though - that art work was actually a "Retailer Bonus Bromide" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromide_%28Japanese_culture%29) and was offered at Animate stores (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animate) in Japan when the PSP version was released there. In a sense, this artwork is "retailer exclusive" to GOG.com :)
