Time for the next surprise in the GOG.com's Holiday Celebrations. We're still working on adding Windows 7 compatibility to some of the games which have some issues with the newest operating system from big M. We're happy to let you know that [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura]Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Myst: Masterpiece Edition are now fully compatible with both 32 and 64-bit Windows 7. To get the latest, Windows 7 compatible versions of the games, you have to re-download and install them again.

The is our third surprise in GOG.com's Holiday Celebrations. Don't know what we're talking about? For the next two weeks, we're going to reveal a little something for you once a day, until December 14 when we reveal the BIG surprise!

Want more? Check back tomorrow for another GOG holiday surprise!

DodoGeo: You should also update the game site to show compability.
They've already done it.

DodoGeo: You should also update the game site to show compatibility.
Glad to see GOG is doing this. I'd also like to see a "stickied" post that keeps a current list of the games that have been formally updated. It would make it easy for us to keep up.

not28: Does this mean I should re-download Arcanum?
Since GOG is explicitly stating that they are updating the games, I'm assuming that those of us who are using Windows 7 (*raises hand*) should re-download the games as they are updated.

Edit: Too many uses of the term "update" and its variations within the same post...

StingingVelvet: I just played Arcanum on Win7 64bit a few months ago and didn't notice any issues.
avatar
Navagon: My retail copy works fine. But then they did say they weren't going to label a game Win7 compatible until all issues with all configurations were addressed. In Blood 2's case, that's going to be an epic task.

Aliasalpha: And fixing NWN if it hasn't been done yet
avatar
Navagon: What's wrong with it?
Unless its been fixed in the last fortnight or so, there's a chrome character problem stemming from a broken slipstream of the latest patch. The critical rebuild fixes if but its an extra 300mb to download when really we shouldn't have to

But it took them almost 5 minutes since they made this post!!! :P
Thanks for the work on making sure those games will run with our modern OS!

A related question:
Is there any list / possibility to see which files were updated / added since their original release on the GoG.com site?

I have a ton of games from here on an external drive and would like to see what files I have to replace for my backup of my purchases.

Thanks :)

Patch as in the version GOG have patched it up to? No a manually applied patch?

Well in any case, if you can fix it yourself it shouldn't be a problem for GOG to update it.
Well, are the community patches/mods still compatible?

Cook: It means we've uploaded new builds of those games and you need to re-download the games and install them again to have the latest, Windows 7 compatible version.
avatar
cogadh: What about users without Win 7 (XP and Vista)? Do any of the changes you made affect us enough that we should also download and re-install?
If it works fine for you, and it should, there's no reason to re-download it again.

I know. Nevertheless, they are pretty fast. ;)
Funnily I got both games from the promo in october (best games on gog?). I downloaded Arcanum now and the file is identical with my backup from october (version 1.0.0.9) To check your game version right-click on it, click on properties and then version. At the moment I'm downloading Myst, I will post the file version of it later.

Edit: Okay, Myst is also unchanged. File version is 1.0.0.13

Patch as in version 1.69 which is the one GOG sells. There's been a small problem on occasion thoughout the game history where files installed in a patch corrupted things, in this instance the colour selection popout when creating a character shows one set of colours but the later patches massively expanded the list so the result is the old interface graphic is being overlayed on the new selection grid and no matter what colour you pick from the visible grid, you end up with one of the metallics.

Because of small but annoying corruptions like this, Bioware took to issuing a giant critical rebuild patch to take the game from retail to the current version replacing anything thats broken and that fixed everything (damned handy for patch-backup focussed people like me too). Installing the last critical rebuild patch does fix the GOG version but its a step that most regular users would not think to take and frankly gives GOG a bit of a bad (not to mention entirely chrome coloured) image. Thats what needs fixing
Even though I don't use Win7 myself, it is a good news anyways.

Same here. I just downloaded the Arcanum installer and it is bit-exact the same one I downloaded a few months ago.

I posted this already a few months ago in the Win7 thread, but maybe here it gets more official attention: It would be really nice to have a list with all actual file versions, so everyone can check if he needs to download the games again. This would save many bandwith and time for us and GOG.
Ok, so inspired by this third surprise I have created list of GOG games which still need their compatibility with Windows 7.

By the way, is is a coincidence that all four promo games are not compatible with Windows 7, and today you announced as third surprise that more games are.
