I thoroughly enjoyed it, but there aren't many episodes of Doctor Who that I haven't enjoyed.

bansama: I haven't seen an episode of Doctor Who in over 20 or so years. Pretty much because Colin Baker ruined it and Sylvester McCoy just did nothing to improve it overall. But I saw the trailer at the end of this last episode and based on that decided to give this one a go.
I was not disappointed. Although Matt Smith still has nothing on Tom Baker =)

If you liked Tom Baker (who was, indeed, an awesome Doctor), I would guess that you would enjoy the David Tenant episodes.

Really? I found Tennant to be more like Davison TBH. Young and playful but serious when need be. The similarity was the basis for Time Crash after all.
Incidentally for the older fans is anyone else getting a Patrick Troughton vibe off Matt Smith's character?

Not old enough to have seen Pat Troughton on the telly thats for sure. You see they have these things called Digital Versatile Discs or D V D's and you can watch really old stuff on your televisual thingymajig. Magic I know.

Weren't like half of the Doctor Who masters erased because the BBC didn't think they were important back in the day?

Well back then home video was for the enthusiast so it never occurred to them that people would want to watch them again, plus video tape was extremely expensive so the BBC's policy was to re-use old tapes. Many shows not just Doctor Who suffered the same fate like Z-Cars.
Still a lot have been discovered and restored. Those that are gone forever exist in audio format.

Delixe: Point very well taken. You are absolutely right, but I guess I just gave away my bias--Tom Baker was my favorite until David Tennant. If you're like me, liking one leads to liking the other. Is the "Patrick Troughton vide" a good thing? before my time and never rented the DVDs--are they worth watching? It would be great to have "new" doctor who to watch.

They should remake these with animated CGI. It would be like that short webisode with Tennant called Dreamland.

Very. On face value he was an utter fool. Bringing out a recorder and playing while thinking and the silly haircut and trousers. However it was of course an act and in fact he was one of the most manipulative Doctors who enjoyed seeing his enemies destroy themselves. There was a sadistic streak to him that was copied much later in McCoy's last season in episodes like Remeberance of the Daleks.

Old enough to have seen near ever single available episode from the first one up until Colin Baker turned me off of them. And most of those were made long before I was born (I was born during Tom Baker's run =)).
But UK Gold was pretty good at showing 4 to 5 hour marathons of Doctor Who on Saturdays or Sundays (I forget which).
As Tennant's episodes, unless I can find them somewhere... chances of seeing them are slim. Did any get a UK DVD release? Sadly, Doctor Who is not a show that ever made it here. As for Davidson, what I recall of him, was a little too wimpy for my liking. But that might be due to All Creatures Great and Small.

There are boxsets in US and EU formats. Some of the last Tennant episodes were also on BluRay. www.play.com have loads.
I thought it was an okay episode. Smith was better than I thought. Overall I think it slanted more towards the children's show (which at heart, I suppose it is) that Moffat was ardent about during his first interviews as producer. I could do without so many pop culture references, though. Can't really judge it on one episode.

Okay then, 2nd episode. This one wasn't so good, I felt they tried to squeeze too much into one episode. It could have benefited from the old style 4 or five 30 minute episodes to flesh it out a little. I liked the idea more than the execution and the atmosphere at the beginning was very good. However I did like the conclusion I'm probably stupid not noticing it earlier though.

Was it me or were those tentacles ripped straight out of Half Life, even the sounds were identical. Also the last shot of the spaceship was very reminiscent of the Discworld.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought about the great A-Tuin. In fact Starwhales were imagined by Leonard of Quirm in The Last Hero.
The episode certainly needed to be longer but over all it was a good episode, good start to the Grand Moff's era. The real test is next Saturday when he tackles the Daleks.

To pit the doctor against the Daleks so soon after the last time is a big mistake in my opinion, where's the variety?
